Default Newbie Motor Question

Greetings - new member here...

I just bought my first C3, a 1975 coupe. (today)

I'm just now trying to hunt down the engine number. I've looked everywhere, no luck yet.

The PO did state that he thought the motor was not original.... and I really don't care, except I would like to know what motor we have.

The only CLEAR stamping I can find is GM 42 on the left rear of the motor.

There is another number just a bit lower, but it is so hard to make out. Hey, I'm 66 and the eyes are about shot.

Anyway, any insights as to what I have or where else I can look, would be appreciated.

No numbers can be found on right side at all.

Pics of the car and best shot I can get of the motor....

I'm sure I'll be asking a ton of questions along the way.

This is my 2nd corvette, had a 69 way back when I was like in my early 30's.... it was a basket case.

The 75 has very good bones... body mounts are great, car runs good, most curious about that motor though.

Thanks,

Len

The pad is on the block at the front of the passenger's side head.

Sharp looking ride! Also check for the casting number on TOP of the rear end of the block on the drivers side, behind the valve cover/cylinder head.
As Mike says, pad is on the passenger side front of block, in FRONT of the head. Flat, narrow pad on top of the block and you may need to wipe with a rag and some cleaner to make out the stamping if it's still there.

Here's some help. Once you have numbers we can help decipher.

Default Found it, I think

OK, the front PASS side stamp photo attached... it was painted over...

Photo of motor compartment as well.

Doesn't appear to be a matching motor based on VIN of the car...

That aside, I'm praying for some good news here.

Thanks,

Len

Your block casting number looks like 14010287, 1980-82, 350, 2-bolt Passenger. The blue paint is also a giveaway for post 1977.

CEU 1980 350 - L LM1 190hp - Camaro

I think it is a 1980 Camaro motor... 190 HP

So the 75 350 vette was 165 ...

Anyway, not worried about the HP rating, but I do wonder what it does to the value of the car.

Given the car is CUSTOM anyway, does the later motor help or hinder the cars value???

I don't think I've ever seen the numbers stacked like that . They are usually side by side and they don't look like GM stamps were used so looks like a re-stamp . But for what reason ? Nobody would try to pass it off as legit even if the numbers did match. As someone mentioned it does look like a post 70's engine or they used a post 70 intake according to all of the sensors and vacuum ports on the water inlet . I'm not familiar with the 75 if it had those . But it is always fun to track it down and see what you have and if it is not what you want it will be a good excuse to buy a performance crate engine.

The shape and size of the engine pad changed post 1977 (not sure which year?), that's why the numbers are stacked.
