Shifter Console Extension Trim
Those shifter console extensions were original installed on a/c convertibles (and 'maybe' some coupes with a/c) to help hide the additional cowl braces that convertibles had.

You don't see many because they were only used on convertibles with certain options.
The extensions were used on all 1969 convertibles that used the early style under dash bracing. It covered up the lower brace that was otherwise visible. When the under dash bracing was revised during the 69 model year the extension was no longer required on non-AC cars and it was dropped.
Convertibles with AC continued to use a version of the older style bracing and still received the extension until the end of production in 75.
Late 68 convertibles also used the same bracing system as early 69 with the lower brace visible, but they did not use the extension to cover it up.
