hi guys im rebuilding the leaf spring on my 74 stingray its a 454 auto and i want to change the liners. The parts catalog says there is either a 9 or 7 leaf but i count 10 leafs and 7 liners in mine. Of course i ordered the wrong one thinking there is 7 springs and 3 overloads because it said the 7 leaf was for the big block. Im confused any help
My "75 has 10 leaves. They list 9 as the standard and 7 as the heavy duty spring but mine was the factory original with 10. I bought the liner kit for the 9 leaf and just used the liners starting at the bottom and working up.
I just rebuilt my 10 leaf replacement....I got lucky and found a bulk roll of liner on eBay....It was supposed to be long enough to get all 9 liners but it was short of the advertised length....Seller made it right and I just reused 2 of the older ones.
I can't say for sure if my spring had ever been apart or not but it did have a liner between each steel spring so I think you will need 9 as well to rebuild this one. All my springs had a bend to them.
Here it is after I finished....It's hard to tell the old liners from the new ones.
Hi andy,
The original springs were designed to have a variable rate.
This was achieved by having the top 3 leafs flat so they didn't affect the spring's rating until the spring was almost completely loaded.
Regards,
Alan
No liner was used between the last flat leaf and the first curved leaf.
