This is the underside of my 71 door.
hey Alan.
There's a logo on both my fuel door and the emblem from it.
To my eyes, it looks like a stylized block S. But could be an illusion or just my perception. It appears right after the shorter part number on both of.mine, and on your emblem. See my photos in earlier post. Then again, I always struggled with that "old woman / young woman" eye test.

The casting used for the 68-70 gas doors, is different than the 71-73 door, so the part numbers, and possibly the markings on them, are going to be different.

I think the square "S" logo may be for Saginaw Metal Castings, part of GM's transmission and steering gear operations in Saginaw MI. I know Saginaw cast aluminum and iron parts, and they may have done zinc die cast parts too? To me, that logo looks similar to the Saginaw logo, seen on steering boxes and transmission cases, cast by Saginaw?

GM had a number of different plants and divisions, that cast iron, aluminum and white metal (zinc die cast) parts.

Some GM trim parts say "Guide" on the back of them. Many of those parts were cast here in NJ, at GM's Fisher Guide Division Trenton NJ plant. Trenton cast a lot of different moldings, emblems and other die cast trim parts, including the chrome bars for the Nomad/Safari tailgates. I had a couple friends that worked there, until it closed in the late 90's.

I have a VERY CLEAR recollection of the differences between C4 (and later) and C3 flag emblems. I bought a new 1984 C4 (in July of 1983, BTW) and took particular note at that time of the difference in the red color of the flags between C3 and C4 emblems. The C4 emblems had the "maroon-ish" red color, while the C3 emblems were red...a bit toward the darker side, but definitely NOT "maroon-ish" like the C4 flags.

I think you can check out C4 logos and see the darker red in their flags; and it's interesting that both of the [vintage and original] C3 flag sets shown in this thread are very similar to the color of the C4 flags. Hence, my conclusion: more than 40 years of 'age' have darkened the original red color in the C3 flag emblems.

P.S. I owned a '68 coupe in 1971/72 (which had flag emblems that were not as dark as those in this thread) and a '74 coupe which did not have flag emblems. I also had been around a LOT of Corvettes at that time as well. But, I'm an old guy...and I could be wrong or not remember well. But, I don't think so.

There's a lot of dust on there, but what 'red' I see doesn't look "maroon-ish". Has it been "mushroomed" for all these years?
