Default 78 Pace Car

Is there a way to tell if a Pace car is a true Pace car or a clone ? Thanks for any help

Yes, you can tell from the VIN if it's a pace car or not. The VIN range would have to fall between 1Z87L8S900001 to 1Z87L8S906502. Those were the only Pace car VINs and those within that range were only Pace cars.

The eighth digit of the VIN is a "9" on Pace Cars, and a "4" on all other 78's. The paint code on the trim tag should read 19/47.

A true78 Pace Car will always (zero exceptions) have the silver leather clamshell seats. Many of the imposters did not go to this expense and left the seats that came in the base coup.

Not quite. Silver cloth was a buyer's choice. There were about 800 of them.

Thanks. A valid point that is oft overlooked by C3 authors.
Where many of the original Pace Car wannabes revealed their work was in keeping the original, non-clamshell seats due to cost back then.
