Default Kick panel bird cage view

Hello all, took one of my kick panels off and got a view of part of the bird cage. (I think) Some surface rust and maybe slightly more, but I believe nothing to be overly concerned, but I have nothing to compare it to. So what is the general consensus. Anything to be concerned with?

Could not leave it that way so cleaned it up and placed some rust encapsulator. Ike

Thanks all. At first I got a little nervous, after seeing some of the badly rusted Vettes on the forum. But after looking closely it seemed very superficial.

I haven't dealt with a older car for a long long time, so it does take some adjustment when looking and working on them compared to newer models . Thanks Ike

I was thinking the same thing w/ all the rusty cages I've seen around here the last few days. Starting to get curious. So I took some pics as well the other night. I feel a little better after seeing the OP's and the responses.

One interesting thing is on the drivers side there was some oil cloth/underlayment or something in there, it was slightly brittle when pulling it out for pictures. I put it back in though since it seemed to keep some stuff looking better in that one. I might hit both sides with some POR-15 after cleaning off the surface rust.

Passenger side:

Drivers side with the cloth/underlayment or whatever in there.

Drivers Side with cloth pulled out. Bottom right corner isn't a spot of rust through, either a flake or part of that cloth that was in there.

It's nice to see others for comparison. You don't know what's hiding behind those panels.

Here are mine before any cleaning or painting....The crud in the corners vacuumed right out....Not quite in as good of shape as the OP's but they as also good and solid, bird cage checked out clean as well. It seems all we ever see are the rusted ones, this post will be a good reference for what "To look far...."

I agree, your cage looks really good.

Just for the heck of it as long as your there and your camera's small enough, you can stick it in opening pointing upward and snap a picture to see what the top of the cage looks like too just for piece of mind.

Here's mine for example. There's some scaling but no rot that I can see.

Drivers side.

Passenger side.

*Edit*
Actually, now that I posted this, it looks like there might be 2 tiny little holes up there.
Oh well, could be a lot worse I guess.

This is what mine looked like with 53k. original miles when I bought the car so I felt like I won the lottery. You can relax , you are in good shape !
