Bought a 68 Vette project and we have some questions about some body issues.
1) we are worried about being able to repair these cracks on the rear clip and being able to keep a nice sharp ridge, is it a fairly easy repair and is this common?
2) Here is the drive side fender well, it has come separated for some reason and it looks like someone tried to bubba fix it with cloth that didn't actually stick, it also looks in pretty bad shape, does this seem repairable?
Lastly, while saving up for other parts, is it wise to go ahead and strip the paint and do body repairs, or should I just wait until everything else is done before tackling the body? Also, after stripping the paint and making repairs, what is the time frame I should put primer and paint on to protect the fiberglass, or can i just leave it bare?
Hi C,
The crack in the rear fenders are in an odd place in that they didn't occur at the rear deck/rear fender bonding strip, but rather entirely in the rear deck.
Have you looked up from below to try to see if you can tell what's going on from the underside?
You'll know better what the cause was and what the repair will be required once you get the paint off those areas of the car.
The photo of the front shows damage to the inner apron, the front fender, and the lower valance. Do you have the lower valance? And, what kind of shape is it in?
What does the right side lower valance to fender bonded joint look like?
Regards,
Alan
The lower valence is missing, I definitely have to get a new one for sure, so I guess my next question is, are all thes le pieces bonded at the same point? I work off shore and my wife took all these pictures for me, so I'll have a look at these spots when I get home next week and I'll post some more on what I find under there. Thank you guys very much!!
I would post this in the paint and body section and dub will answer this for you and tell you how to fix it, i have learned alot from just reading his posts
Already planned on buying the AIM , thanks for the link on the glas-ra and I will definitely invest in that as well!!! I guess I need to look around more because I didn't see a paint and body section!!!
Also there are some great tutorials on youtube, west systems epoxy is the brand I used on the corvette. They also have excellent tutorials. You can buy it at West marine. No, it is not made by West marine, just has the same name.
Ive also done fiberglass repairs using fiberglass resin and glass mat from 3M. You can buy it at lowes, home depot. In fact I just used that product last night repairing the fiberglass nose piece on my gem cart golf cart that got damaged by some moron at work. It was very workable, and I got great results.
If you do a search, I posted a tutorial on this website. Fiberglass repair technique.
I dont profess to being an expert, but Ive learned a thing or two over the years. Fiberglass repairs are not difficult, but do require proper prep for a permanent repair. I prefer to do all of the initial repairs on the backside, no one sees them. Once the panel is solid and secure, I do the topside repair, it makes for a very durable and long lasting repair. Good luck. Ive been there, done that.
