This chrome line runs along the side of the car, on both sides.

A 'bone line' is a character line in a car body....GM Design is quite famous for this.
This terminology comes from your lower leg, the TIBIA has a sharp line in the front.
This can be done to stiffen metal, to keep it from oil-canning, or as in the case of the Vette to create character and shadows and tones.
John Schinella was the 'king of bone-lines' He worked for Larry Shinoda before he went to Poncho to work on the F-3 Firebird.
As cool as bone-lines are stylistically....when the big fat lady slams her door open into your Vette....guess what it hits....the bone line!
So some yahoo put some cheap Pep-boys trim over the bone line to A. mask all the chips, B. keep that from happening again.
Me....I'd rather park in 'north dallas fourty' and not worry about the fat lady.
These trims can be a bitch to take off...usually hours with a heat gun on medium, so as not to pull the paint off!
YUCKY POO-POO. lol
