My '72 Stingray has a stock pop-out rear window and a storage tray under the rear deck. I've never seen this on other vettes, and am constantly being told ( from many vette owners at car shows) that they have never seen this before. Was this an option, or a special order item on the early C3s.

All 68-72 coupes had the removable rear window and the storage tray from the factory. If you've never seen another, you need to get out more.
O/P , A bunch of us like this option soo much, we are adding it to our 73-77's me included.
"IF" i ever owned a coupe ( which tina is suggesting we get another vette ) it would be such a must have option , its such a cool odd feature not to miss out on,
As far as being snarky to the OP that he thought he had something special,
Let that forum friendship and camaraderie flow...lol.
I find it more odd people at shows didnt have a clue,
Are c3s waning in popularity?

My dad actually told me about the removable rear window years ago. I cannot recall ever seeing one removed from the car, or atleast stowed away in the tray. Before that, I just assumed that it was a fixed window.
A company called RKSport makes something called a Sport Back (or something like that), which borrows from this old Stingray feature, to be used in lieu of the back glass on 93-02 F-bodies. Came across a guy on Facebook who is wanting to build something similar (didn't know about the RKSport piece.
The Honda Civic Del Sol is another car with a similar removable back glass.
I'm so glad we have the option! In Summer when you have to leave the tops on so you don't get your noggin roasted, and take out the rear window to create that oh so delightful cooling cross flow effect, otherwise the engine just wants to burn the hairs off your leg.

This was standard on the coupe, I have an original 69 I've owned for 45 years and the 68 and 9 the was fiberboard, cardboard I don't know but they were big and bulky and sagged after time and the later ones were fiberglass and much better with some modifications I put the 72 model tray in mine and works and looks great.

This is the reason a '77 or older was a must in my search for a Corvette. A guy I knew in high school had an early C3 with the pop out window; for thirty+ years I have wanted one. I found a window and tray from a forum member and bought it before my car was even delivered from California.
Fever1, How did you modify the later fiberglass tray to fit a 68-69? I have a 72 tray and it is too short to reach the front fiberglass to latch it. Lou.

Can you move the latch? May have to fabricate something...
Hi Lou,
I believe the 72 tray used a push button latch similar to the latch on the 3 compartments.
The earlier tray used the spring-steel latch.
Would using that latch help you at all?
Regards,
Alan
There's 'about' 1" of forward/rearward adjustment on the spring type latch.

You are correct Alan. My '72 has the push button latch and it can be adjusted a little.
