Just replaced the a-arm dust shields on my 71 coupe. What a PITA getting those plastic rivets out without a special tool. My old ones were original and torn up, so I had some question how they should look. Found a few photos from a 9 year-old thread, but one didn't show them tucked around a-arm.

You're right, not easy to get out.
Be thankful you didn't have to deal with the staples used during 68 production.
The 'flap' was typically tucked into the opening in the upper a-arm.

I think the problem with the staples is getting them back in....I used a bonsai **** cutter to cut the backside off the plastic rivets....Made getting them out much easier.
