Finally got around to dropping the spare in the 71 convertible I bought. Holy Crap, there was an original spare. Still has some blue left on the white letters.
Hi 69,
NICE find!
I can't quite see in the photos… do they have Speedway Wide Tread in raised letters on the sidewall?
I'd be interested in a photo of the back side too, in order to see the paint on the wheel.
Thanks!
Regards,
Alan
Hi Tooch,
I think the amount of 'blow through' seen really varies.
I remind myself it was purely incidental, but I too would expect to see a little more.

Alan
I have one just like it (unused) and it's still in the tub! I lowered the air pressure in it to less than 10 psi. It's in there for 'nostalgia'; I have no intention of ever driving on it.
P.S. I have Hagerty insurance with flatbed coverage, triple A road service (AAA), and a cell phone. Why would I ever need a spare???
Hi Tooch,
Here's an interesting one.

Alan
Is that really an original, the way it left the factory rim?
Would there have been one stacked on top of it, then the guy sprayed the one on top, then left this one get by with the overspray that way?
Another example of anything was possible I guess!

Nice find! A little hard to see but it looks to me, like it has never been mounted. In addition, never had a trim ring or center cap installed on it. Another interesting thing to note to me is the wheel weight. Another great example of proof showing the use of a weight supplier, other than the "Micro/Bada" brand, which is mostly accepted by judges. The "14" inside the oval, is one of many I found used in my research. A closer look might be in order to make certain, but it looks great!
Nice find and it should clean up well. Mine was unused from my '72. Had to mount the new tyres on the original wheels but looking out for a spare wheel so it can be remounted for wall art. It has some tarnishing but mostly in good nick
Nice find. I also found one like it on my 68 when I started it. It still has the nubs on the tires. Unfortunately it was the only good thing on the car when I started.

As far as the silver paint goes, spares are black on the back side. Are the other four the same or are they silver front and back? I want to redo mine and want to make sure it is correct. The last time they were painted, sometime in the early 80's, I don't remember how they looked, but they have been an incorrect silver on both sides.

Yes, all the wheels on the car were painted Argent Silver on the front side and the back side was painted semi-flat black. The overall quality of the factory paint job was not very good at all. (As Alan's example above clearly shows one example.) The wheels were hung by a wire through the valve core hole and sprayed. This resulted in runs and metallic sags. The silver paint overspray was visible on the backside. Note that the silver color had a more pale greenish tint to it from 68-70. It was more of a bright silver for 71 and up. ( There have been MANY discussions on the color tint.)
Here's a pic of my attempt at achieving the look on my original 73 spare.
Hope this helps,
Tooch
