1981 - Vin on Engine Stamped Over?

1981 - Vin on Engine Stamped Over?
I found the engine stamp on my 1981 vette, and was able to see that the suffix code is ZDD, which from what I read means it is a 1981 motor with a manual trans. However, where the vin number is supposed to be under that suffix code, it looks like it was stamped or marked over with just slashes - "//////////"
Is this common? Does anyone know what this means?

Hi,
While engine plant and St.Louis 're-stamps' and 'grind-outs' are not common they are certainly seen.
As 69 said, a photo of the pad may give some indication as to what may have happened, where, and when.
The same type of stamp irregularities is seen on transmission cases too.
