Default Flight case on the luggage rack....?

Anyone know the weight capacity....? What I thought would be a cool way to carry a few things on an overnight trip, now seem like it might be a little too heavy.

I picked up this case at Goodwill for $10, it's heavier than it looks.

Nice case great price, lucky,
i have several from my club musis biz days,
If that is what it looks like unless i grossly underestimate the rack even empty i could see it pushing the limits as the weight us divided on small mounting legs,
Also some most of the older cases dont like rain,
But that case sure looks sweet up there,

The Mid America install instruction sheet for the 68 to 77 luggage rack specifies a max carry weight of 50 lbs. That's a good looking case!

Good point about the rain Bats....But my car doesn't like the rain either.

I would guess the case weighs in around 25lbs....I'll check it tonight, thanks for the info.

Years ago I carried two full sized suitcases on a '77 I had on a number of trips we took with it. Easily 50#'s total.

I've since seen a few folks carrying large coolers on them with drinks and ice.

Good luck... GUSTO

To me thats a little iffy.If it does cause damage from weight/ vibration the cost to repair could be $$$. If you have towing on your insurance I'd carry fix a flat and loose the spare and use the carrier as storage.

The weight is distributed to the legs so it's about 6 lbs per leg. That ain't much and most likely won't cause any problems.

I can't help but think you will generate some aerodynamic downforce with that big box acting like a spoiler. Perhaps not a lot of downforce, but enough to cause issues if the rack is already loaded to the max. Also the aerodynamic force will come and go with speed constantly stressing and unstressing (flexing) the fiberglass. Or maybe not....

Some of the early racks were 6 hole racks and the later ones were 8 hole racks. Which one do you have? That would certainly impact how much weight I would want to carry on it.

No problem with that case...unless you fill it with lead. Just use some bungies to tie it down and you're good to go!

It's an eight hole....I would need to balance out the weight if I used it....The rack is curved and the case is flat. I figure a couple different thicknesses of pipe insulation would work.

I would certainly put some padding between the rack and case. That should spread out the load and prevent scratching/damage to the rack and case.

I don't believe the weight limit applies so much to the carrying capacity of the rack and rear deck system so much as to the concern regarding the damage and physical injury that an overweight load could cause in the event of a sudden stop or accident. I wouldn't want to be sitting in front of that case if it breaks loose.
