I bought this car last year-previous owner had new interior installed a cpl years ago (and not drove but a cpl hundred miles as he was restoring the rest of car) and have always been a different color (outside vinyl is a lot lighter than the inside leather). One of my good friends has an auto upholstery shop and told me that's normal (vinyl getting lighter then the leather). I just had it painted (exterior) and the painter left it outside most of the time and it has gotten worse from the sun I believe-I'm either going to have them recovered (will I run into the same thing with new seat covers) or thinking about just having the vinyl redyed darker. What do ya'll think? Looks bad doesn't it. I took a pic of the whole car as I think the seat's color difference sticks out like a sore thumb on an exc condition car otherwise.
yea that's normal .how bad it looks maybe a personel opnion.I would dyed it if it bothered me .if you dyed and it turned out bad ,,,,hey you was going to replace anyway.

Exactly what my upholstery shop buddy said when I showed him tonight. It has gotten worse-he said dying the leather is preferred but since the leather matches everything and the vinyl doesn't we could try and see how long it lasted dying the vinyl. Amazes me that's normal-looks like two tone interior.

Don't know how normL it is. maybe i just got lucky with my 81. Granted, it has not seen much sun but your looks like pretty uniform fading.
How 'faded' the vinyl portion of your seat are, I can't guess. But, the vinyl looks more like "Neutral" color than "Doeskin". Maybe other owners of doeskin seats can comment (with useful knowledge).
If the vinyl material is cleaned WELL of all petroleum protectants , oil, grease, dirt, etc, recoloring it with good quality vinyl dye will last as long as the original parts have done. And, if you use a polymer protectant on them, it will limit the amount of UV rays getting to the vinyl.
Thx for all the info-very helpful. I had the sides done Fri-they look good. I dropped it off and didn't notice-but next time the dyer comes by his shop I'm going to have the console part done. Just hope it lasts.
