As some of you may know my last 69 was a experience I rather not repeat so I am asking for help on this one. I have found one that been storage for 20yrs asking price $ 37 +. Now the car is a Non matching 427 390hp 4speed unit according to him I have not been able to confirm due no vin. He is a small time dealer and not used to classic cars from I can see of his wed site. I have not told where to look yet either until I got more info on the real value of this unit. I know his price is but how high he did say it was running, so that tells me that he started it. any suggestions?
Hi Craig,
The BIG upside is that it's a 69 convertible… no doubt about that.
Certainly the FIRST thing to determine is whether the frame or birdcage have any rust problems.
With that information you can then begin to narrow down just what the car WAS, and now IS, and what would be an APPROPRIATE amount of $$$ to pay for it.
As ED posted the $37,000 price is pretty optimistic for the seller…. since it's value is likely considerably less than that.
Perhaps some more photos and details will help folks with 69 bb knowledge and experience give you some guidance as to what might be a wise offer to make.
Regards,
Alan

I going to try and put more pics as of right now, I am trying to get a paper trail of documentation of what was done to the car. The prior owner is deceased and his wife is in a nursing home so information is a slow process.

But it is a red BB convertible, what more could a person want? For $37k, keep looking. That thing is wrong from one end to the other. When a fish is rotten, it stinks from the head to the tail.
From the brutally honest dept....WAAAY to much money asked. $27,000 max.
Non matching, crappy paint, wrong color, everything is kind of skew wiff. sitting for ages...
Keep looking! Apparently the current owner is confusing this with a 427/435 hp...L-88...kidding, but many don't realize that a low po BB is worth LESS than a 350/350.
A car that has been sitting for so long will require a lot of money immediately to be put in service. Thousands if you don't do your own work-belts, hoses, tune, carb rebuild, tires, suspension, radiator and gas tank service, fluids, filters. In the next year a lot of other needed repairs will surface. Buy a cherry car or pay bottom dollar for a project (which is what this car is) if you like wrenching
Pass on it. If your budget is $37k plus then you have much better choices. Be patient. It took me a year and a half to find the right rubber bumper car to use for fun. Heck just look in the C3's for sale section. Just today a 71' LS-5 went for sale with a 4 speed for $35K or so.
Thank you all that what I was thinking I guess after my last one I just wanted make sure. I wasn't letting something in rough slip by. Now if someone else is interested in the car its located KE, at Wheel-N-Deal Auto Sales Inc you can check out his web site Kent Preston is the owner and selling the car from what I was able to put together he a small town dealer and not familiar with classic cars at all. Again thank you all for you advice on this corvette!
Craig
it does not have to be so 'correct' to be worth 37, but it has to have characteristics that take the place of originality and/or it's story that you may find will justify the increment in price.
for example extremely good condition, a fresh 10K paint job, zero rust, freshly rebuilt mechanicals, lots of new stuff, a 5000$ sound system, etc, would justify an increment over a standard condition price.

I agree completely here I think he under the impression the car valued in the 50 to 60 range, from the first email I got from him and with myself not knowing the market I couldn't really tell him otherwise.
I am currently in the midst of a mechanical restoration of a 1969 427/390hp 4 speed coupe and I am around 20k deep and close to being done, by the end I will probably be in it 25k and that is with a friend doing most of the work and me helping when our schedules match. 37k + 25k = 62k. I think it is time to pass. Even if you look the car over with a fine toothed comb, there will always be more things you find as you work on the car.
I got my 69 from a friend and it had sat for 13 years and was likely going to need an engine overhaul (was making knocking noises) She wanted to know where the car would be and wanted to know that the car would be well taken care of, so she sold it to me for what she paid 13 years ago which was 16k. She also wanted the option to buy it back after I had the Vette back on the road for 16k + what I had to spend to get it up and running, safe and reliable. I have some videos posted in this forum showing the progress. Had I not gotten the for the price I did, I would be WAYYYY underwater. As it is, I may come out close to even. Good luck in your search!!!
