Default 1971 help – what is this part?

I checked the AIM and even spoke to some vendors, we are not sure.

On my 1971 small block, on the passenger side shielding, there is a one
inch hole in the shielding with a wire going into the block.

What is this for and can you post a picture.

I want to replace the wire as the harness looks damaged.

Thanks

Hi 71,
I believe you're referring to the opening for the electrical connection for the temperature sensor that is part of the 71
Combined Emission Control (CEC) system.
Regards,
Alan

This is the sensor in the head the wire connects to.

Thanks Alan, that's it.

Any idea on a part number for the sensor or wire, and which supplier?

I've seen some online, but not with the same prongs.

Hi 71,
The wire is actually a long pig tail that connects to a short lead that exits the engine harness around the rear of the right side valve cover.
Is that wire and connector still present in the engine harness?
Regards,
Alan

This is the lead and connector at the engine harness.

Yes it's all there, I assume the wire I'm looking for is about 18 inches long

Hi Len,
I added a photo showing the lead coming out of the harness and it's length. It's 2"-3" ?
The pig tail is long.
Regards,
Alan

Try LectricLimited for the pigtail and the switch.

we were wrong

Introduced in 1970, the Transmission Controlled Spark (T.C.S.) System controls exhaust emissions by eliminating vacuum advance in the lower forward gears while at operating temperature.

Hi 71,
The system used in 1971 was called the Combined Emission Control system. (CEC)
The Temperature Controlled Spark, (TCS) system was used in 1970 and 1972.

One of the differences in the hardware for the system was the placement of an electrically operated vacuum solenoid mounted on the right front of the carburetor.

Both systems required a temperature controlled switch… thus the sender in the right side cylinder head.
Regards,
Alan

The 71 CEC solenoid and bracket on the carburetor.

Thanks again Alan, I'm still confused, but I found the wire I want to replace, all this is over my head, so I'm just happy making it correct regardless of its purpose

Maybe you thought YOU were wrong, but Alan is never wrong!

He's got the knowledge, photos of his very sweet '71, and willingness to help other Vette Heads out. Way to go Alan
