The pump was the Melling 'Shark tooth' P/N 10552ST. The 'long pan' as used in non P.S. cars would not have cured the problem. It now has a Melling 55, IIRC. It's noted in papers as "HP Melling oil pump'; when engine was primed it produced 80psi.
Have fun with your Dad - lucky guys.

It has power-steering so the p-s pan. Came that way from the get-go.

Still think you could do 10.5:1 with piston change and the original [9.0:1] cast iron heads. I run my '65 GP [with 10.5 CR] on pump premium and have never had any problem. Folks with aluminum heads can go with 11.0:1 with today's premium.
Think it over. If you are going for 'nostalgia', so be it. If you want it to actually operate like a 'real' LT-1, you need to bump up the compression [and get rid of the flat tappets to give you reliability and longevity].
Have fun, whatever you do; and enjoy the time with Pop and Gramps.

The pump used is a Melling 55A, in the high-pressure variant.
Sorry it's taken so long to answer that question for you.

So just a couple of updates
Engine came apart last week unfortunately it appears the motor had previously spun a rod and the crank was swapped out to a cast truck unit.
I just picked this up to replace it.

I picked up the heads and intake that needed repair. The water jacket where the heater hose was broken, welded improperly then jb welded to attempt sealing. I was really concerned it would not look right but Lorenzo's fast flow did a fantastic job on the repair and the heads look great.
Here are some photos

So,.... why post all this stuff?
While there are a lot of members that this stuff is simple or requires little thought ther are members like me that don't know more than they do know. I also do know I don't know what I don't know and by meeting and discussing and posting I have learned an immense amount about my car.
-wallifishrmn thanks for the pm.
Redbarchetta thank you for all the insights from your timing exercise and other chats! Alan71 your photo library is a tremendous resource. allvettesforme thanks for showing me the batcave and can't wait till your project is done. It's people like toylman that have pointed out benefits and pitfalls they encountered and sharing countless hours of acquired knowledge with me. RescueRogers I'm planning on stopping in on the way home in the spring when the motor is done.
Now back to the project... I just got back my restored fan clutch from corvette-stop
Its by posting someone can say "do you realize you have the wrong part or I did that this way". I am amazed at both the lack of information on LT-1' and worse the amount of wrong information that is out there. To the more advanced corvette and car builders out there some of us are a little green and need your knowledge so be patient
