Is it complicated bring a Canadian car back to theUS?
Anyone have experience buying a car in Canada (from dealer) and transporting it back to US? Taxes? Customs? Hidden extra costs?
Thanks

When dollars were close in value it became cost effective for Canadians to buy in the U.S. but the car companies and dealers wanted to stop that so they told U.S. dealers not to sell to Canadians and also would not honor the warranty for foreign purchases which is basically against the law. There was a court case in the works and I'm not sure if anything became of it. Not sure if there are similar issues buying in Canada but I would look into warranty for sure.

I can tel you if a car is over 30 yrs old there is no duties to bring from US to Canada. You have to give the border 5 days notice and paperwork as bill of sale, registration . Then when you get it in it has to have a government inspection. Then here it need running lights all the time and speedo in km/miles. 50 yr old classics probably don't need this as grandfathered.
Call Us customs and they can tell you what you need but it should be rather easy

Yeah I got that, read the last line of my post. I'm just saying if buying new there are warranty issues for Canadians buying in US, so that's the first thing I would check if buying in Canada and exporting. It might be all good until you need warranty. If buying used it doesn't matter so much.

Another thing to check is whether your state's DMV will register the car. This is one way for the state to control cars that don't meet its emissions requirements. The info. is in the serial number as to where it was originally sold and the DMV will be able to identify anything it doesn't like. I'm in Vermont, so you can imagine how the Tree Huggers, Vegans and Hippies want to control the environment.
