Is there an easy, quick way to either remove unlock the steering lock on a '71? Reason i ask is i'm finally!!! getting that '71 I've been writing about and I need to turn the steering in order to move it around the rear of the house to the front and then into my backyard from the alley. Even if it means damaging the lock mechanism.I need to have car out by 4 this afternoon.Quick responses will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Forgot to mention that I don't have a key, for either the ign or the fuel tank.

Reason: added info
Hi sc2,
I believe if you remove the transmission lock cable at the steering column lever, and hold the lever 'up', the steering wheel will be free to turn.

Alan
Thanks Alan. Is this right under the steering wheel area? I'mnot where the car's at right now. I'm still new to Vettes, that's why I ask. Thanks again.
Hi sc2,
ntf is right!
I just checked on my car and you can't move the lever unless the ignition is unlocked!!
I'm sorry to have miss-led you!
Regards,
Alan
Isn't this thread teaching those "Bad Guys" how to steal a car easily....
And, also teaching the Good Guys, that they should always have an alarm or any other theft prevention means, so that they don't get their car stolen.lol

Not really a laughing matter, in my opinion....but if you're ok, I'm ok.
Not sure about a 71, but some thieves used a slide hammer in the key slot to pull the lock cylinder. It's on held in by a small tab at rear of cylinder (see photo). Removing it this way may damage the cylinder and / or the column housing. You could also do a search on Chevy Ignition lock cylinder removal.
You can see the tab on the left end of the cylinder
Remove the slag from the far right rectangle, push down with a small screwdriver while pulling out the key switch.
Now use a screwdriver and unlock the column.

I just wanted to make everyone realize how easy they can get their ride stolen and encourage them to get some theft protection. I see too many cars without ANY theft deterrent, then the owners wonder how their car got stolen.
