Default Weird question

I just picked up a 73 Corvette

Question is..... What is the deal with this gas pedal?
Anyone know why someone would put this in?
sorry if it's a dumb question, just never seen a pedal like this. Thanks

Thanks....have an extra pedal in my parts surplus. Car has been sitting since 83.....thinking it was done in the 70's. Actually makes it harder to brake as you foot tends to hit the gas pedal as well. Thanks for the guess work from everyone. If any corvette pirate wants it, let me know.

My first guess would be that he was not good at driving a standard shift and starting out on hills without drifting back. I can see how that setup would help him with that just having the pedals so close together . But that setup looks very dangerous to me , especially for someone that is already timid about driving a standard shift.
