Default QA1 coil overs.

Which spring rate 450 or 550 for the coil overs. I have a 502, aluminum heads, water pump. No a/c.

I used 600's with BBC aluminum heads, intake and water pump.

Still pretty soft.

If these are what I think they are, aren't you even a little concerned that the shock mounting area of the lower control arm will now be supporting all of the weight of the car instead of the entire spring pocket in the original control arm? Shocks mainly go along for the ride, they don't support the weight of the car.

I remember looking into something like this and there was an outfit selling something very similar that did use the spring pocket. Decided to stick with stock.

I guess they work. i haven't seen any complaints about them.

Member Ddawson and I have VPB aluminum discs that we have in the spring pockets. This comes from the VBP front mono spring kit. I’m actullay away from home and in Tucson so I cannot send a picture but, these fit in the spring pocket and then the coil overs bolt through them, spreading the load. DD recommended these to me and gave me the part number. It did take several weeks to get though. The coilovers are the way to go! Better ride and handling and also easy height adjustment.

i bought the rubber spring spacers from Ecklers. These are like the AC ones that GM had. They were Mr. Gasket brand. It was said to raise the car 1 inch. When I got them I took the springs out, this is the 3rd time. They didn't fit on the spring and didn't fit into the lower spring pocket. So I put the springs back in and put the car back together. I had the frame nicely detailed and painted and have to do some of that over.
Well I ordered the coil overs and that will be the last time I do springs in the car.

It was an over statement to say these used the spring pocket but they obviously have a much larger contact area and therefore better supported .

With the ones you are looking at I had visions of metal fatigue and collapsing suspensions at speed. Not an engineer over here but alarm bells are ringing. Bottom line, I wasn't very impressed with any of this and if I remember right the style I settled on is a pain in the *** to adjust. My reason for interest was adjusting ride height which I eventually decided didn't need to be adjusted.

best of luck!

Bought mine front 550’ direct from Qa1 and are super satisfied! Just wished I bought for the rear as well. The leaf spring is 150yrs or so old crappy tech....

Wow, I hadn't noticed the qa1s used the standard shock mounting points on the front control arm before. I pulled those threads just with Bilstein Sports! I have longer bolts with nuts and washers in there now, no way would I trust those threads to hold the weight of the car.

Mount the t-bar above the spring bucket, not below.

I've autocrossed and street driven my '66 for about 7 years now with this setup and no issues.

For street use, 550's do fine with BBC/Aluminum heads.

Good luck.

Speaking of shocks. I heard years ago that if I used KYB gas filled shocks that that in itself would raise ride height about a half inch.

Can anyone confirm this with these are any other self contained pressurized shocks?

Why not steel?

Can't see aluminum adding much strength, looks nice though.

I think it would be a good idea to add welded in reinforcements to the original control arms when using these in my opinion.

The VPB aluminum is super strong, does not need to be steel. If you break these, well, let’s just say you have bigger problems
