Why does the motor in my c3 look like it sits about 6 inches to the passenger side? NOT an optical illusion..............please shed some light on the subject!
It isn't 6 inches but the engine does sit to the right of the centerline to provide the driver with a bit more foot room and room for the shifter linkage. Not sure of the exact distance of the offset but it's there. Probably an inch and a half or so...
Run a tape from the air cleaner hold down stud on the carb to the fender on each side and see what the difference is!
I didn't notice it till I put this air cleaner on it ! Until your post I thought maybe it's because I need to replace my motor mounts but now I'm thinking maybe it's a design thing?!?
I measured twice before I cut my hood but after looking at it the hole looked off center ........the reason for this post. Looking at yours mine is no different. I grafted a 427 stinger onto my hood and cut the hole the same size as the stock air cleaner because I'm using the stock cowl setup................it works.
Hi,
The pinion doesn't enter the center of the differential.... it's off-set to the right.
From JohnZ:
"Quoting Zora's 1963 SAE paper on the design and development of the 1963 Corvette, page 2:
"To achieve a [47/53 front-rear weight] distribution in this range, the passenger compartment was placed as far back as possible and the engine centerline was offset one inch to the right, taking advantage of the fact that passenger foot room requirements are less than those of the driver. This offset also reduced the width of the driveshaft tunnel, because the crankshaft and offset rear axle pinion were now on the same [plan view] centerline.""
