Default stiffness of shifting cable

I am asking if anyone else's transmission shifting cable is getting hard to slide??(I know the car is over 40 years old, like me , some things get a little hard to move). Winter project is to take the cable out and see if a little lube will help. However if this is how the cable normally works, I will not bother it. Of course I am talking an automatic transmission(T350).

Hi l,
Typically the cable should move easily within the protective sheath.

Sometimes the cable begins to develop a slight 'kink' at either end where the cable enters the sheath. This can make it more difficult to slide.
So perhaps check for that condition too.

Also, there's a small bracket on the transmission that helps align the cable.... is that there?
Regards,
Alan

Cable is quite straight where it enters the sheath.

Yes, the clamp is in position, the car has not been messed with(BUBBA delite). I'll take the cable loose where it attaches the transmission, then see how it feels. I did have the motor and transmission out while I detailed the engine bay and under carriage, maybe, I did not get the attachment of the cable correct, but it felt that way before it was taken out. I just did not remember to check that problem while doing everything else. Tanks to Alan for responding, you are a great help of this forum!!!! This is on a 76 by the way.

This topic comes up once in a while, but I never see posts about lubricating the shifter lock cable. My original cable became hard to put in reverse so I replaced it with a new one. I lubricated the old one after I took it out, and the cable would move/slide easily again.

I've seen some that the battery ground went bad and electricity being what it is, (extremely lazy), finds the easiest path- sometimes right thru that shift cable. Tends to weld things together.
