Default 72 without AC: remove heater core

Hi,

The core was never connected when bought the car. Tested the blower yetsterday and that worked, so thought I would check the heater core today. It is probably leaking (as to the being disconnected), but I have to get it out anyway.

Because I don't have AC, I'm doing this from the engine compartement. So far everything went ok. I removed the clip on the left side, but if I try to move the core, the whole box moves.

How do I get it out from this point? Is it still attached somewhere?

Thanks!

G.

It should pry out from the left/passenger side.
If you can get a coat hanger wire around the brass end you can pull on it.
The core will pivot at the inlet/outlet rubber gasket seal.

Thanks Fred, I'll try that tonight!

I also don't know what the connector with the 4 wires (first picture below the core) is for?
Everything works, I'm only missing the wiper washer pump, is that the connector for it?

are you replacing the core??? they may of had it unhooked because of the heat shut off valve not working(to cut down on heat during the summer months). did you test the old core??? Make sure and have the new core tested(if replacing) before installing it(may leak when new even). GOOD LUCK>

on my 68, under that sealant mess on the hose side, was another retaining bracket. just pull the sealant off and you should see it if its there

Default It is out!

Ok, it finally came out. Clothing hanger was not strong enough, put a bent screw driver in the left lower corner to pry it out. That worked. I'm not even going to bother testing it, it's clearly shot, so I'll order a new one...

Another small question, this is the heater door in the fully closed position (wheel all the way up). Is it supposed to leave a gap, or do I need to adjust it so the door closes completely?

I'm doing the same to my 69. Did the clip hold the core just pry off? Mine seems to be really stuck but so I wasn't sure if there was a specific method. I started to use a screwdriver, but it felt like the case it's in or clipped to was going to bend, so I stopped and started to ask...

Yeah, same thing here, I eventually used a bent screwdriver and a piece of wood to create some leverage. But I did bent the case a little in the progress, not that anyone will notice that
