I'm painting my engine before assembly and I bought Chevy Orange but I also saw chevy red at the auto parts store. I grabbed the Chevy Orange. Well I have a couple coats on an it is orange. I'm second quessing myself and thinking Chevy Red would have been a better choice. Anyone know which is correct for a 1968 L79 (327/350).
The first SBC engines (265 V8) were painted a RED-orange (more red than orange); shortly thereafter, the color was changed to "Chevy Engine Orange". Different paint manufacturers call it by different names, but the common term is Chevy Engine Orange [until they started painting them blue ].
{No offense intended to '77-later C3 owners...}

Just a bit of trivia to add
Unless it was a early 1957 with a 265 and manual trans then it was Chartreuse;

Hi tp,
I really don't think the 'shade' of the color orange paint used was very consistent.
John Z has written that the orange enamel used at the engine plants was purchased in bulk from whatever supplier happened to have the best price that month. 50 gallon drums?
So you probably don't need to lose any sleep over the shade orange you use.
Regards,
Alan
Use a paint that can withstand at least 500*F; somewhat higher is even better. That will prevent the paint from blistering/burning on the intake crossover channel. MANY brands sell "Chevy Engine Orange". Find one that will do the job and buy it.
Looking at those pistons, I'm curious as to the CR you are shooting for. That orange is defiantly more red than the Duplo Chevy Orange I used.
The engine is a 350/350 from the beginning. Someone have downsized it with other pistons (9.0:1) and 240H cam. New pistons is H618CP30, specified for 10.68:1 with 64cc heads. I have replaced the cam with a Comp Cams XE268.

Wow. I specs are pretty much the same. Mine 327 dyno'd right about the same. I think the torque was 428. Should move the car with some spirit. Nice job.
