Has anyone done a front carpet by themselves? I know there is the kits but unfortunately right now that isn't a option. There is a car show at the end of March and I would really like to have something in there that looks a little better then the crap that is in there now. I guess I was wondering if there was some sort of template to go buy so it looked halfway decent in the corners
You can make templates from craft paper and cardboard in the car. cut it out, and trace it on carpet. The problem youll run into is that since its not molded in one piece, you will have seams. If the edges on the carpet are not finished with binding/ serging it will start to fray and fall apart.

My carpet was a wet, moldy mess that was in pieces. I basically needed a complete interior but I wanted to drive it so I cleaned and dyed what I could and wasn't about to spend good money on carpet to use now and have it worn when I was ready to buy the rest of the interior (will purchase everything as a package) so I made my own carpet set, front and back and did exactly as NONN37 suggested by making templates and transferring it to the carpet. The pic attached shows how it looks. To stop the edges from fraying I purchased stick on carpet edging available at most hardware stores. I have since added carpet to the door panels. It still looks good after a year of service. Cost? Under $100, front and back.
Whoever had it before me tried doing the same thing I'm wanting to do without very good results and it's two completely different carpets. The back carpet is in pretty good shape considering it's 36 years old so I am going to dye it this next week I'm off.
Dang it CF...this thread put a guilt trip on me. Just ordered an Al Knock carpet set. Started pulling the interior. I assume you use a putty knife or a plastic scrapper to clean up the compartment floor. Is there a chemical to use to soften the glue or just use elbow grease?
I redid my 76 including pulling the dash, fixing the duct work, replacing the heater core, evap core, vacuum hoses to heater control, heater control, bulbs, taping the duct work so air won't leak from it,replaced all interior panels, including the rear, put in removable rear window, all carpet with be cool insulation, painting the console top, repairing the ash tray slides. Had fun doing it, would consider doing it for hire if someone in my area needed it done.
...My compartment floor was clean & bare after I pulled the carpet. I blew out all the dirt & debris with high pressure air and I was good to go.
Doug,
Pulled the carpet and felt...looks like I have my work cut out for me. My best guess is that whoever did the last carpet job used way too much adhesive and didn't do a good job in surface prep...probably glued over most of the old glue.
I tried mineral spirits and krud cutter with poor results. Any suggestions for chemical cleaners (Goo Off is not recommended for fiberglass surfaces).

There are some fine examples of interiors here. I'm halfway through helping my wife do the front carpets of her car.
To the OP's question, if funding is the issue, have you considered buying a used set to clean up? Perhaps someone here has a set that they'd send you for the cost of shipping if you post a WTB request in the parts forum. You might get a good enough for a car show set that way. Good luck!
