Default 1968 Shifter Mount

I'm working on the transmission for my car. Was originally an Auto but I'm converting to an M-20.

I have the z bar bracket in place as well as transmission mount tabs on the crossmember. I neglected to get measurements for the shift mount. Apparently there's 2 holes in the back side of the crossmember which look pretty important.

Can someone measure their crossmember and help me locate a position to drill holes in mine?

Hi D,
Is the 68 shifter mount the same as 69+ mounts?
Isn't the position of the rear 2 bolts for the shifter bracket really determined by the location of the front 2 bolts on the bracket which is determined by those bolts connection through the rear transmission mount bracket?
Regards,
Alan

The brackets in place.

That's definitely part of the equation. Maybe even all of it. My shifter mount will sit on those Flush and get me a relative location in the back but I can still pivot it up and down to some degree. I just don't want to have anything too far out of alignment.

Hi,
If you install the 2 forward fasteners which go through transmission mount bracket into the shifter mount and tighten them (first photo) won't that give you the location for the rear 2 fasteners (second photo)?
Regards,
Alan

Duffleball, I have a 68 four speed with the body off and shifter & trans in. I should be able to get those dimensions later today unless some one beats me to it. It’s the two bolts on the back of the crossmember right?

Yes. The ones in the back. I'll also try to pin it down with hardware and just see if that gets me where I need to be. But more information the better.

Hi D,
In thinking about this I remembered some posts by folks having a problem occasionally with the shifter lever hitting the front of the opening in the console trim plate when shifting into reverse, first, and third.
The service manual indicates one of the remedies for this is to 'shim' the shifter mounting bracket bolts to 'tilt' the bracket.
Are you in a position that you check that fit before you get too far along with the shifter mounting bracket fasteners?
Might be good to do if you can.
Regards,
Alan

I wouldn't be in the position to check that just yet. The body still off the frame. I figured that was the easiest situation to deal with the mounting bracket in the first place. But it does give me another thing to think about. I remember I had a 73 that had that exact issue.

Hey Duffleball, so i got some pics with a ruler. See if this helps. In the second one I put the ruler up against the left exhaust hole in the crossmember. Sorry the lighting is not the best my stupid flash on my phone doesn't work...

You can eliminate the shifter hitting the cutout by setting it up for short throw. That's if your transmission has two holes (instead of one) where the shifter rod linkage hooks up to the side of the trans.

The short throw position are the lower holes shown below. Make sure if you do it to use the shifter alignment tool

Heres some measurements from the frame over, I referenced the exhaust cutouts as well so you have a few measurements

the drivers side measurementsare right side up, passenger side to center are upside down

DRIVERS SIDE

drivers side frame All measurements right side up are frome this point

PASSENGER SIDE

If you have the holes in the tongue mont I would bolt the shift mount in, then scribe the holes onto your crossmember, then check measurements. It will be the easiest unless you have 4 arms

Thank you to everybody who got me measurements. Between the two of you with the pictures and all of the good info. To be able to get something pretty well squared up I will report back as I work on it.
