Default Removing seats question

Hi all -

Going to re-build my seats. Got new foam and covers. I'm discouraged out of the blocks - how do you get the seats out? I see two bolts holding the track to the floor in the front of the seat, no problem. I have slid the seat forward and I can't see any track or bolts holding the back of the seat down. Is this something that comes up from under the car maybe? Any help or pictures would be greatly appreciated! Car is a 1970 coupe.

Thanks!

Back of the tracks should have bolts unless someone removed them.

The back is still definitely secured to the floor...I thought maybe he carpeted over them, but I don't feel anything under the carpet either???

Assuming stock seats and rails, and no bubba fixes, the bolts are there. Keep looking.

From a 72 and the seatbelt retract covers are not likely on yours but you can see where the bolts are for the tracks.

On the back there are holes on both sides of the track, maybe your looking on the wrong side?

You can see the back bolt on the outside of the outside track, right at the bottom of that pic

I wonder if my seat is not sliding forward all the way? How far forward should it move?

If it's been "Bubbafied", look under the car and see if there are studs coming through the floor with nuts on them. The later C3 seats were mounted that way.

Hi MF,
Here's the typical location for the rear mounting bolt on the seat track.
Regards,
Alan

Rear bolt on each track. The bolt remains visible.

Front bolt on each track. Bolt and track are covered by carpet flap.

The rear track bolts mount in these threaded plates.
This happens to be the plate for the track near the transmission tunnel.

thanks for the pictures - that helps a lot. I can now see the rear bolts...and even get a finger tip on them. But how in the H do you get them out? There is no way I can fit a socket or a wrench down in there. You guys both showed pictures of the rails without seats, would I be best off to try and remove the seat from the rail and then be able to get the rails out easier?

You'll never get the seats off the rails in the car, I don't believe it's possible.

I was using just the tracks to work out the carpet and seatbelt cover locations as well as some other items, much easier than working around the entire seat.
Alan... well Alan has pictures of virtually everything in every conceivable state of assembly/disassembly whether it happened or not. Puts Bubbas like me to shame

Sounds like the seat isn't going all the way forward, you may have to shoot some penetrant into the tracks and move them back and forth a bunch to get them to go far enough ahead (and even then it's just enough to get at the bolts)

Thanks Mooser - so, right now, I am trying to fit a socket between the side of the seat and the side/floor of the car (which is rising up to the sill). Are you suggesting that the seat should slide far enough forward that the socket will not have to fit between the seat cushion and the side/floor? That the seat cushion will be out of the way?

Turns out the seat slides better when you put your butt in it and scoot it that way. Ha! But of course now I find totally rusted bolts. So, I will spray them with some lubricant and let it sit over night, etc. Then might also use my impact wrench.

Also found a cozy house for a dam rodent under the seat. Ugggg.

Do you have the rod shown in Alan 71's picture?
If you move it to the left side of the car while pushing the seat forward.

If no rod tip the front of the seat up and move the part shown to the left while pushing the seat forward.

The other side slides freely.

Those bolts go through the floor and are exposed on the bottom of the car. Use penetrant there also. NO impact wrench, you will break off the bolts. Slow and easy, use a wire brush on the bottom threads to clean off corrosion. When removing and the bolt gets tight, go the other way. Work it back and forth with lots of penetrant. T

Hey all - me again. So, I got 3 of the bolts out. Working on the passenger seat. The last one is the rear bolt on the outside (by the door). The head of the bolt is rounded off. I have been spraying it with penetrant every couple days for weeks. I bought a bolt extractor and that isn't biting into the head. Not sure what else to do.

If the bolt goes through the floor and there is no nut, what do you think of using a dremel and cutting a slot in the bottom of the bolt so that I can put a screwdriver in the slot to try and turn that??? Any other ideas?

Why is it always the simple things that kick my ars???

Cut it - that's what I did. I ended up running a replacement bolt through the floor and installing nuts on the bottom of two of my seat bolts.
