Default AIM/Ground Location Help

Good morning everyone. I'm going to install the grounding kit on my 68 and I want to make sure I put them everywhere they need to be. It's been a while since I've posted so I just want to remind some that I got this project completely disassembled in boxes... so I've never had the pleasure of seeing it together. With that said, I also flipped through the AIM last night looking for a page with the ground locations on it, couldn't find anything. That's not saying it's not there, I just didn't see it. Can someone direct me to the right place in the AIM or just tell me please. Thanks in advance. Jason

1 negative cable battery - frame.
2 negative cable from frame to engine block.
3 negative ground braid from frame - bird cage, located under left foot.
4 interior all grounds common point - left of headlight switch to birdcage.
5 all interior components also must have gnd. like speed-o and tach, headlight switch, wiper switch console gnd.
6 headlight support - core support.
7 core support - frame.
8 rear harness gnd- to frame.
these are the major must have gnd. cables

Hi 13,
69V did a NICE job listing the ground locations.

To find them in the AIM you need to look at the sheets for:
the Forward Lighting Harness
the Engine Harness
the Dash Harness
the Rear Lighting Harness
the Radio Installation in the Option Section of the AIM

As you can see the info is quite spread out.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

IIRC, doesn't the starter harness ground to a bellhousing bolt?

you are referring to the "wiper ground" black wire large lug by itself,
and it gets bolted to the bellhousing, Not on the starter lugs.
forgot that one.

Please excuse my ignorance but these comments are a little confusing to me. Is this the cable that you're referring to or, is there another ground from a bell housing bolt to the frame that I'm missing? (from '69 AIM)

Thanks,
-Doug

in your diagram cable 3, is called out in my list as item #2

there is a wiper gnd not shown, and it gets bolted to bell housing,

this Black wire frequently gets accidentally connected to +12 at starter, by uninformed mechanics.
because it looks like it should go there, because it has a large ring lug.. wish makes bad smoke for you.

Thanks. Is the wiper ground built in to the harness or is it a separate wire?

Understood. Many things run on smoke and, if you let the smoke out, they stop working.

Default More Grounds

My '70 has braided wire grounds connecting the exhaust pipe u-bolt clamps to the frame (1 ground at each exhaust line). These are located just forward of the crossmember that is sleeved for the exhaust pipes to pass through (IIRC).

I haven't found them in my AIM yet (still looking), and I don't know which years this configuration applies. Perhaps others will chime in.

I recall having great difficulty locating the spot for #6 (above), headlight to core support. Me and a buddy looked forever using mirrors and everything we could think of. I am going to have to recheck because that was quite a while ago we were working on that then moved on to other areas, but I don't think we ever found the hole for the ground screw. Now that 69V has done such a good job of laying them out I think I will go down the list and check them off. Nothing more critical than good grounds on these things.

Hi 70Y,
1970 cars that were equipped with the optional radio had the 2 braided copper ground straps that run from the exhaust clamps to the transmission crossmember.

Hi 68/BB,
Look for a small hole in the front of the drivers-side core-support.
Regards,
Alan

These are from my 70' with Automatic Transmission. Hope it helps:

Right Motor Mount/Block

BirdCage to Frame #1 Left

Trans to Exhaust

Antenna

Taillights and maybe gas tank ( ? )

Battery to Frame

Driver/Left side front door jamb

Same

Believe there is a ground screw on the left side of this cross bar mount
Notice the strap on the drivers side #1 mount is bolted with a small clip on the end that is attached to the birdcage end channel at the #1 mount after the body is remounted.

Odd looking #1 Left Side Frame to body strap/ See frame photo Left side

Hi CG,
Very nicely done!
Perhaps explain to the folks where the ground strap that runs from the screw hole shown in the second photo connects... and how.....an odd one!
Also, the frame rail hole for the antenna ground is used for one of the rear lighting harness grounds too.
Regards,
Alan
