I'm running the new wiring harness and came across a question. The harness has one connection (brown wire) for the parking brake switch, but the switch on the car has two brown wires coming out of it. One is bare and the other is spliced to a couple others with this relay looking thing. How is the switch supposed to be wired (supposed to have 2 wires on the switch, 1 on the harness)?
This is literally the only piece of wiring in the entire car I didn't replace. If it's supposed to just have one wire, I'm just ordering a new switch and calling it a day. Thanks!
Hi EM,
I'm curious about the 'relay'.
It LOOKS like one of the relays used in the emission control system.
What year is your car; and is it an M40 car, or an a/c car?
Regards,
Alan
The overall body does look like that, but the plug is different. I originally assumed it was some kind of breaker. Of the three wires coming out, two had been cut. The only one still hooked up was just twisted and taped to one of the parking brake wires.
As far as the car, it was a Bubba-special. It started life as a very early '68 (serial 144), but had a '74-ish front clip, and interior stuff out of everything from '68 to late '70s. There were parts of a later alarm, a ton of hacking to switch to later ignition and gauges, a few remnants of '68 wiring and more splices than wire... I spent 2 weeks chasing all the wiring (much of which just bypassed the fuse block and ran un-fused through various holes in the firewall) before giving up and buying all new wiring harnesses.
So, the short story? No idea what anybody was thinking when they worked on the car. The poor thing was one short away from burning to the ground.
Hi EM,
The relays typically have part numbers stamped into their lids.
That might help identify what it is.
Could well be the anti-diesling which is used on a/c equipped cars.

Alan
