Hey all. I want to redo the center gauges on my 81 and create room for a double Din touchscreen radio/nav/BT etc. I've not yet removed the center bezel. I want to make a plate out of aluminum to superimpose on the center bezel and cutout holes for new multi gauges and the DoubleDin radio. There are some radios that are only a like 2 inches deep which shouldn't interfere with air vents and such behind the bezel. Has anyone else attempted this successfully. I would eliminate the oil temperature gauge and use one 3.375" quad gauge or 2 dual gauges. and maybe still have room for the seatbelt, battery, low fuel etc lights.
Have you considered the Single D1N with the "fold-out" type of video display? Just an idea.... may keep things simpler.

Soooo It Has Begun!!!
Tear down. Out with the old. Bezel out. Mocked up and cutting begins. Center cut out and mounting holes drilled. Not final mock up configuration but the perimeter fits nicely. Dbl Din will be at the top.
Mocked up and ready to go. Got my cheapo slim head unit to fit. New faceplate machined. Awaiting mounting hardware and new components. More to come. Intellitronix digital gauges will be ordered soon. Deleting the oil temp gauge.
Nice work. Seems to be well thought out to give you what you are looking for. Not sure if you are planning for it but I put a plug on the gauge wires so if/when you want to get behind them, it's easy.
I am in the process of doing something very similar. Only difference is i moved all gauges over to where speed and tach are and using the center cluser area for double din touch screen and a small storage compartment on the bottom. Looking very good!

I thought about that too. I've not yet done the Speedo and Tach. But do plan to get those to match. Do you have pics of your progress?
