Default Creeped Out... Thieves?

It was a windy afternoon in So Cal. I have had the cover over my 69 corvette all week, working on it on the street a few feet from my door. I go to take the trash out tonight. On the passenger side of the vette, just under the edge of the cover, an empty 12 pack of pepsi was wedged between the curb and the car. I go to the driver's side. Another empty 12 pack of soda is stuffed underneath by the door.

Now maybe the high wind DID blow these two oddly similar trash items into identical spots underneath my car, but I am assuming the worst - that a thief may be using the trash as some sort of test, to see how frequently, or if at all, I check my car. What do you guys think? Ever heard of anything like it?

I have a lojack, but with the work I'm doing at the moment it can be easily found. I am creeped out.

Sitting on the street, it's fair game for the street people. I'd find secure storage if I were you.....but that's just me!

Sound like you need to leave a bag of chips next time.

Or maybe a few cartridge cases, teeth and a pool of blood. If you happen to have any handy.

FWIW: why would car thieves be fooling with soda cans? If they wanted your car, sad to say it would be gone with or without soda cans.

Kids maybe fooling with you in area.
Keep an eye on it so it doesn't become a canvas for tagging.
Different generation today.
Entitlement to damage it cause its there.
Really though it needs to be off street or the entitlers think its of little value to you and they will treat it accordingly.

Hate when people mess with my stuff too.
A big wood chipper out front with a dummies legs hanging out of the shout has an amazing effect/deterrence.
Just sayin.

I actually did hear of something similar.... burglars putting paper, or tape on your front door, then coming back later to see if it`s been moved. If it`s still there after a couple days, they know nobody`s home, and they can enter without fear of getting caught. I agree, I don`t think I`d leave it on the street. I`d pay for a secured storage unit if I couldn`t get it inside at home.

On empty soda cans? Or were they just really thirsty?

I taped two notes to where the soda boxes were. Told 'em to smile for the camera.

Unfortunately have no choice on the street. It's going to be my daily driver, and I live in a place with no driveway.

I like how you think. Took my wife to gun range a while back. She pulled her silhouette target and asked the guy at the counter where to toss it. He looked at the obliterated center mass on her target and told my wife. "Lady, if that were my target I would hang it near the front door of my house along with a sign that says 'There ain't nothing in this house worth dying for".

Do you have 'regular' car insurance or 'collector car' insurance? I know of NO collector car insurance carrier that does not require the car to be garaged overnight. If your car gets damaged/stolen and you file a claim, the carrier WILL investigate to determine if the car is being garaged (talk to neighbors, etc.). They will deny coverage, if they find ANY reason to do so.

Where I live you cannot keep a car on the street that you are working on and covered with a tarp/cover overnight. After a couple of nights you would have a ticket, a week and it would be towed away.

Just a thought. How nice of you to have a tarp/cover over it so the thieves can strip the inside of your car without being seen.

Just park the car in an abandoned lot where other cars have been junked. That should be a safer location.

Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a Nest camera, or a drop cam and mount it outside. Every time it sees or dectects sounds it will alert you. I have mine installed and you will not believe how many strange people come to the door while I’m at work. I can also talk through the camera- it really scares the crap out of people. Plus it is the perfect deterrent as thieves don’t like to mess with properties with camera monitoring.

Surprising amount of sass in this thread. I know this is hard to believe gentlemen, but I'm young, not rich, and in an over populated area. I simply don't have access to a garage as they are luxuries where I live. I'm making this my every day car. Doing what I can to protect it. I am in a relatively quiet, safe neighborhood. But it still worries me.
