I don' know why either. Seemed stock type starters were straining and actually cracked the last one. Had the one from Chevy on it but just found the one bolt that holds the armature housing on the floor . Apparently broke off in housing. That one lasted 5 yrs, was the go torque one but don' t feel like spending 200 right now so was looking for some suggestions. Motor is a blown sb
If your factory starter does not have the support brace that attaches to the end of the armature housing...then YES... the starter can crack due to not being correctly supported....thus able to flex and move under a load
Your factory starter is not held in by ONLY the two bolts that hold it to the engine block...there is another part required.
Dub, very aware of the brace, sb and BB. The starter I have is a Chevy hitorgue one, no provision for a support. Also not as large or heavy like the factory.

My 69 which is basically stock has the OEM type starter, the 6t8 has a modified engine with headers got a MSD starter. I hear 'Powermaster' has good gear reduction starters. T
The Powermaster XS Torque has worked well for me. Light (only 8 lbs.), very powerful, fits with room to spare with headers, and reliable (well over 10 years so far, no heat soaking issues).........but not cheap. This one....https://www.summitracing.com/parts/p...6/applications
I am running a Powermaster Mastertorque 9612 on my 355 with Doug's headers. It required the diode kit for Install on my 1970. Works excellent (4 spd and 168 tooth flywheel) good clearance, miniature body and excellent cranking torque. I have only had it on for a year and roughly 1k miles. 210 at Summit.
