Default steering column adjustment

Hi all,

for whatever reason... my steering column is sitting too high... which in turn is squishing up the instrument dash pad, which in turn is meaning that the dash is does not look right.

looking at the column underneath, there APPEARS to be some adjustment in the fixings photographed... (plus one other below that one).. but.. having loosened off all 3 bolts... try as i might to pry them along the adjustment channel, they won't move more than about 1mm.

do i need to adjust something else to free these bolts, or ?

thanks for thoughts!

Dave

If it's anything like my 72...

Those bolts you're looking at are attached to a bracket and that bracket is attached to anther bracket with 4 bolts that is attached to the firewall/dash

The joint between the two brackets angled and is slotted in both side to side (the lower bracket) and fore/aft (upper bracket)
When you move the lower bracket fore/aft it raises and lowers it somewhat and that in tern raises and lowers the column (left/right doesn't change the height)
Then those two bolts you show are slotted on the column to allow for the fact that the bracket they screw into moved fore/aft

In your AIM is a section on setting it up, here's a screen cap off mine

bracket on firewall (fixed)

lower bracket (movable)

The four bolts (two on each side) that hold the two brackets together are carriage bolts so just loosen the nuts shown and loosen the two bolts for the steering column you showed and in theory you should be able to slide the lower bracket back (away from the firewall) and it should lower the column...

with the above two posts.

The steering column can be adjusted. Also loosening the two nuts in 'VIEW A" in the illustration may be required to take tension off the firewall mounting surface.
try not to get to crazy with it and only adjust it as much as you need...due to you still want to make sure the main steering column shaft is in line with the rag joint ( coupling) .

Or- somebody could have slid the aluminum inserts in the wrong way- notice in the pic below- the slots are angled.
