Default Mufflers

Should I straight pipe my 80 vette or should I keep the magnaflows that were on there when I purchased the car? Not sure which it has but it sounds pretty decent. I'd assume can just saws-all the rear mufflers off if I decide to straight pipe it correct?

Hi GH,
Probably a good idea to make sure the saws-all has a metal cutting blade on it.

It's a great idea. You can "lay frame" too by taking the air out of the tires. Neat tricks.

Video and audio after the mod would be great too. Especially any interaction with LEO.

Not smart. What's the reason, are they rotted out? Because you want the sound of no mufflers?

Your car go for it. if you want the real effect just cut the exhaust system off under the floor so you can get the real effect of carbon monoxide poisoning in the cabin. There is a reason the GM engineers had those pipes sticking out the back end.

Aw, come on guys. Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?
Cut the pipes about 15" below the exhaust manifold.
Should be interesting as the car melts down. Don't forget to look for leaf piles in the street this fall to idle over. Give the neighbors a thrill.

Post us a video PLEASE!

On second thought, if he cuts the mufflers off close to where they join at the pipe, that should heat up the gas tank pretty fast, providing an interesting display for the 4th of July. :

If you do make the cut, make it so it won't be too hard to put it back the way it was. It will probably sound nice and loud, but the time will come when you can't stand it anymore. I replaced my mufflers with glass packs, I also run long tube full headers and an H pipe. To me, it sounds just right.

Weld some cutouts in the exhaust. If you want it loud for a day just uncap it.

Something tells me you've never heard a car without mufflers before, it is extremely loud and without a doubt the first time you come near a cop they'll light you up and ticket you.

Is your question in regard to using the particular tool, or performing the act and operating the car? The tool will work (and for God's sake, use full-fitting goggles under there), and a really raucous and annoying noise will result Gabe.

I know that you shouldn't assume anything, but since this was posted in the C-3 section, I'll go out on a limb and assume the car may be a '75 or newer, therefore may still have a catalytic converter on it, and be a low compression engine.

Therefore, it might not be all that loud.....in fact, it might not sound all that good, either. I has a 1977 Pontiac Firebird, back then, and I had the Hooker sidemount headers on it. The paint that Hooker applied to them, at their factory, lasted about 2 months, before it completely burned off, so I removed them, glass-beaded them, and re-coated them with VHT header paint.

After I re-installed them, I wanted to thoroughly heat up the paint, to cure it, before I slipped the sidetubes back on. I thought that this might help prevent the paint from scuffing off, as I slipped the sidetubes in place.

So, I fired up the car, and drove it around the neighborhood for about 10 minutes. Truth be told, an 8:1 compression "smog motor" just doesn't have that crisp bark, that a well tuned, high compression engine has. The car actually sounded better with the sidetubes and glass-pack inserts in place......
