Default Need tire size help

I own a 1974 Corvette with the 350. I purchased what are supposed to be ralley rims off a 1969 Corvette. CorvetteAmerican.com list the tire size as 225x70 R15. Can I put a bigger size tire on this rim to make it look meaner?? and what size should I get?????? Thanks

Not sure what you mean by "meaner". But, if you want to use the stock 15" wheel rims, 235R60-15's are about the same diameter as the 225R70's. The later C3 cars came with 60 series radials on them.

235 width tires will fit on ALL pre-75 C3's. You may be able to fit 245's or 255's in the front (they will easily fit in the rear), but the wider tires may rub at 'full-steer'.

Hi BM,
You may find that the 235-60-15 tire doesn't give the look you describe because it's only 26.10 inches tall.
The 225-70-15 tire is 27.4 inches tall.

The 26.10 inch tall tire will look small in the wheel arch. It will be 'fat' but 'short'.

So when considering tires, go to a site that list tires by size and gives the height and width for each size tire.
That's the best way to compare them.
Regards,
Alan

215-70-15 Tall but skinny.

255-60-15 Tall and fat. (may rub on some cars.)

I agree with Alan....wider tires usually result in smaller diameter, and the wheel well gap gets "huge". To me, the stock taller skinnier tires look the best on these cars.

Nice photoshop skills there, Alan!

have your tire shop mount a 255x60 15 on a wheel and test fit it to the front and back.
on my 69 I ran 265x50 15 for many years and now run 255x45 17.

IMO, 255R60-15 tires on an early C3 look like the 'balloon' tires on a B-24. They are so noticeable, your eyes focus on the tires instead of the car.

Hi C2,
That's actually the same car with two different sets of tires on it..... not a photoshop.
Note the side exhaust too!

Alan
