I repaint this molding quite often on many Corvettes.
I generally remove the molding and If there are areas where the paint has completely popped off and I am looking at the aluminum trim. I strip all of the paint off and then I apply an etch primer from SEM...then the satin black.
Now you can just go in and paint it...but in time...from what I have found. That if an etch primer is not sued... the paint can pop back off.
Painted the trim on my '77 with VHT satin Bumper and Trim paint. The match was very nice. Sanded lightly and primed first. It's held up perfect (except of course where I had to promptly scratch it with a T-top). No need to remove the molding, you can easily mask around it.
I agree the front windshield can be done when it is on the car depending on the level of quality a person desires.
But this thread is dealing with the back window trim..and the amount of time it would take to mask it of and have it look half way decent. I can have the trim off an stripped.
Once again...it all depends on what a person is expecting.
I have the tool to pop off the rear trim, but so, so long that I used it that I am hesitant to try it to remove trim. Remember probably a decade ago, I did remove trim, repainted with plain old satin flat black and has looked good since. One or two very minor spots showing aluminum underneath. Will probably use a fine paint brush with a pointed tip and touch up soon.
VHT makes a satin finish paint that looks correct , Advance Auto parts sells it .. I agree on removing the rear molding to repaint it , it pops right off with the tool.
