Default What's wrong with my antenna?

Hi all, I'm attaching two pics of the antenna on my '73. Everything works fine, but... is THIS how it's supposed to look? To be honest, there's not much "style" to it. It seems incomplete somehow, or...? For a car with so MUCH style, it seems the engineers just stuck on an antenna from any ol' car or truck and walked away. Is it installed correctly? Is there a part missing? Like a cover or...? Am I supposed to see that black plastic area? Your comments? Thoughts? Thanks!
Mark

I believe that the rubber piece is a seal to keep water out of the antenna socket, and it should fit UNDER the chrome plated nut and collar.

I take it that no "instructions" or assembly drawing came with the antenna set.... (one of my [many] pet peeves with the aftermarket industry).

Hmm... That sounds very logical. Thanks. And it would definitely look better if that rubber area was hidden. But before I disassemble or try anything, does anyone have a pic of what it's supposed to look like? Thanks again!

Ah! So the "bulge" part of the black rubber is supposed to show. Got it. Can't thank you enough!

Hi MO,
I don't see how the nut tightens down in your photo.
Do you have some 'mixed' parts?
Perhaps something like this is more typical.
Regards,
Alan

I don't know yet. Once I've had time to investigate and attempt to rectify it, I'll be sure to take some more pics and show y'all the result. Thanks so much for your pics. They will be very helpful, I'm sure!

I removed that top silver collar and tried to screw it down onto the black plastic part some more, but with no luck. It looks like this now (pretty much the same). Should all the black stuff go UNDER that big chromed base nut below? Is this simply assembled in the wrong order? If I loosen that big base nut, does the entire thing fall inside? I don't want to mess it up too bad.

loosen up the nuts you need to press the parts together. the black needs to press into the gold piece. you may need to take it out and tap it together.

I agree. I'll take it apart again and see if I get it to fit together properly and let you know what I find.

Well, I took it all apart and put it back together again trying to make the changes we discussed but this is how it came out (again). I guess the threads are not working as they should. it's all tight and works fine. That black part and that silver collar just don't want to go down any further. Anyway, thanks for all the help. Life goes on... (right?) HA
