I'm trying to change out brake proportioning valve on the '74. I've got all but 2 fittings off while using flare nuts to remove them. The two are stuck on so tight that they are getting rounded off. I've used a hammer on the flare nuts and also used LOTS of penetrating fluid. So where do I go from here?
1) Cut the lines and replace all the brake lines and start new
2) Try and cut the lines right by the fittings and hope I can re-flare and put new fittings on and have everything reach the new BPV
3) Use a torch on the fittings and try to loosen them up that way
Thanks for your help...thought this would be a quick and easy replacement
If you have enough line I would cut them and re flare. If not then use heat and they should come off. Vice grips with couple pieces of thin plastic like crazy carpet to protect nut would work
YES...some of these lines can be STUBBORN. Even for me
To save the flare nut...due to it being on the brake line that runs to the rear. Which is really fun to install as a whole. I CUT the proportioning valve and remove some of the area around the fitting so it can come out.
Sometimes I use heat...sometimes I shock it with my air hammer and I do not beat it to death. I just let the vibration try to aid in breaking the tight bond.
If the flare fitting are for the lines that go to the master cylinder. I take the lines off the master cylinder and bring them with the proportion valve when I remove it. That way O can slide 6 point wrench onto those flare fitting and get them to come out or CUT the proportioning valve to get some of the brass out of the way to get the line off.
They make special boxed end tubing wrenches for tubing that are cut so the boxed end could slip over the tubing. Check Snap-On Tools or even at harbor freight for cheaper ones. They are a must and will hold the nut and not round them off.
An open end wrench will distroy the nuts especially if they are those nice billet aluminum ones.
A heat gun on the nut will help.
A trick I have used with success-use a flair wrench and put your vise grips on the flair wrench to really clamp it to the fitting so it cannot flex open. Along with the suggestions above try to alternately tighten and loosen till it breaks free
Thanks for all the help. I was using a flare wrench and wasn't having success. I used a hammer to shock it but that didn't help. I'll use heat and then go from there. I ended up not getting the one that goes to the MC but took off the one easily by the MC. So it's just the one going to the rear brakes.
