True 6x9 boxes will give better performance due to either porting for low freq response or a sealed unit for increased power handling. The Innovative setup is a free-air application. In my case I am using the 6x9's for mid and high frequency, so the Innovative setup works great. I opted for a 10in "truck box" style kicker subwoofer enclosure for bass; and made mine removable, mounting the amp to the box, and putting plugs on the power and remote wires (the audio in was already RCA plaug). That way I can just unplug the box and leave it home when I want enough space for t tops back there.

I used something very similar, about 25 years ago, in a '79 C-3 that my wife used to own. I bought the "mounts" from Crutchfield, and installed a pair of Pioneer 4 way speakers. The major difference between these and the ones that I bought, was the Crutchfield pieces had black speaker grill cloth, backed with wire screen, for protection, over the front surface, and the speakers mounted from behind. I put a 35W/channel amp in the RH storage compartment, to drive the speakers.
I ordered one of these for the back of my '70

Still not a slam dunk. In a '70 there are "wings" on the far sides that have to be cut off to get it to fit over the wheel wells and past the drain tubes. That necessitates taking the carpet off the box, which actually isn't carpet but rather felt.
Next hairball is the "carpet" is affixed to the box with what looks like rubber cement with a paint brush.
Heatgun and a scraper to get that off... seriously there's so much of it on there they might as well have dunked it in a barrel of it.Once it's been satisfactorily re-carpeted, then the last piece is to safely attach it to the car so it doesn't become a battering ram should the unthinkable happen.
The width is probably the max to get it over the fender wells. You could easily build one of these that's a bit thicker to provide a little more sub volume. The brightstar box is glued and stapled. With the carpet off I would give it a 8/10 on build quality. -1 for using staples rather than screws (Granted it's glued, so it's just a personal thing once the glue is set) and -1 for basically covering the whole box in a seriously crazy amount of rubber cement.
If you could order one without the felt on it, that would be ideal.
JL Audio makes a 10" that supposedly works perfectly with .5 cu/ft.
Still in process on my end...

I hid 5.25" Polk MM in the kick panels, putting Polk 6x9s and a JL Audio 10 in this, and running it all off a JL XD700/5 amp under the passenger seat. People have put it in the cubbies in the back, however it appears to fit just fine with plenty of clearance under the passenger seat all the way forward. That way it won't overheat.
I'll post more once the whole project is done.
