right mirror well nuts are rubbery material?
Bought a repro large head chrome mirror for my 1975 - for the well nut inserts in the door should they be a flexible material or something solid?
Thought they would be like wall anchors.
Thanks.

PMR2000, until someone with better knowledge comes along , I think I remember reading that well nuts used a rubber type of material to expand. I am not sure what time frame but the right hand mirror was a dealer installed option, not from the factory, so access and speed was a requirement, thus the easy to install rubber well nuts.
Don't take any of this for fact though!!!!! My memory is not so hot!!!! In fact I forgot what the question was!!!!! Ike

I went from the sport mirrors back to the stock mirrors on the last repaint.
I did not like the rubber nuts, just to loose. Since in had to fill in the old mounting holes i just made a metal plate and tapped it, it mounts it pretty solid now.

Here... read this thread. Quite fascinating on how to do a metal plate.

By all means, use the solid plate. That way, when you hit something with the mirror (or someone just having "fun" bashes it), it will take part of the door with it.
Oops! Maybe those rubber Well-Nuts aren't so bad after all....

From link to Dubs thread above: "thread will show you can install a metal retainer just like GM did for the left door."

Help!!
Well nuts seem good, got those and bracket on no issues, nice and tight.
However the allen bolt that holds mirror to bracket does not tighten enough to hold mirror tight. The allen bolt is definitely as tight as possible. Tried a tiny washer but hard to get inside the slot did not seem to help.
Mirror is off ebay Derby City Corvettes......could it be flawed part, any suggestions?

I am wondering if the bracket is too widely spaced for the mounting point under the mirror as if the shape would need to be squeezed closed for the mirror to not feel loose?
The bolt definitely tightens in the mirror without the bracket....did not try with the bracket off the car, did not want to remove it from the well nuts since that went fine.

I used Rivnuts (blind rivets) to install the RH mirror on my '76. I'm VERY happy with how solid it is mounted...no movement whatsoever, and it feels identical to the driver side. I used those rubber nut inserts that came with the mirror on the '74 I added a mirror to and was NEVER happy with the mounting. It had a definite wobble to it at the base that I hated...it also vibrated at 70mph...it was NOT a solid mount in the least...no matter how much I tightened the mounting screws. Those nut inserts are fine for the rear luggage rack, but SUCK for mounting the RH mirror.
There will be those that disagree with my mounting technique, and that's fine, but this method has worked terrific for me...there is no vibration at any speed, the mirror holds it's adjustment, and not one person has ever tried to knock the mirror off of my car...or ANY Corvette I've ever owned for that fact.

My issue is not the base that is tight with the well nuts. My issue is the Allen bolt holding mirror to the mount does not tighten enough to keep mirror from moving a little

I removed the door bracket from the car, if I tighten the allen bolt through the mirror base off the car the bracket wobbles around. Can't tighten the allen bolt enough to be solid on the bracket.

See the gap between width of bracket and slot how ould an allen nolt hold this tight without having to close the gap since no threads on bracket?

It looks like you could tape or glue a thin washer to the mounting base to take up that gap. Have you tried that yet?

Yes, me...on a '73 I installed one on. The "shim" washer closed that gap did the trick...no more play. I think getting one that fits snugly of the box is really a luck of the draw.

Hi DUB,
Somehow your name got included in your link and it didn't work. I took the liberty of fixing it:
