Default Steering colum help

Hwy Guys, so today I am Tackling replacing the lock cylinder on my tilt steering colum, off a ‘74. I recently had it rebuild but an awful supplier here in Florida. He did a nice job but left it a lot of the finishing parts and claims they were in the box. So I have Dismantled the colum to replace the lock cylinder and got it off no problem. But I went To install the C clip and the center shaft pulls right out, so I’m stuck. Is it supposed to secured in some way? Any advice helps

You need to put a bolt into the end of the shaft to lock it..The telescopic shaft has a rod in the center and uses the "star" head bolt as the locking device. To use your lock plate compressor, you need to lock the upper shaft.

You will need to thread a bolt into the center to stop the telescoping. A normal bolt won't fit in the tool, I shaved the bolt head down to a rectangle shape and used vice grips.

An allen screw works best, as I recall.

So I placed The screw as described above, got the c clip installed and as I’m putting it back together it is no longer telescoping. I cant Even pull the upper shaft out... what now? I had to tighten that 5/16 screw pretty tight to prevent from putting the upper shaft out
