Had the same problem and tried several different mufflers. All droned. My final fix was to use Car Chemistry 2-disc inserts in the header collectors. It lowers the exhaust volume a bit but more importantly it gets rid of the drone. They claim there is no performance impact.
This is for a 3" collector. They also make them for other collector sizes. Note that the price is for each, you'll need 2.
zwede, you're running EFI aren't you? Is your O2 sensor in the collector? I'm looking at these inserts and wondering if they will interfere in any way with it. I just pieced together a 3" exhaust and both sets of mufflers I've tried are just a little too loud at idle. I wonder if they would be as effective installed further down like after my x-pipe.
Right now I have Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. The problem is, they drone like hell around 1600 rpm or so. I do have a X pipe with 2.5" exhaust and Hooker Super Comp headers. The drone is bad enough to screw up my stereo listening in my car. Any thing out there I can swap that is quieter so I can hear my tunes while cruising? Straight throughs are obviously even louder than my turbos, but I want something that's quieter but doesn't choke my 470hp 383 at the same time. Thanks
Hey Brian,
Did you ever resolve your drone issue? I have a very similar setup to yours including a 383 with headers. 2.5" pipes and those Dynomax Super Turbos. I'm planning a new exhaust because I hate the drone so much.
Update on mine. I cut out the X-pipe and went to an H-pipe instead. I like the tone much better and also I found that the drone with dynomax ultraflows was gone. I was able to remove the car chemistry header inserts (with the ultraflow mufflers) and no drone.

I was going to say 'stock exhaust' too. I like my tunes more than loud exhaust (these days).
But welding an H-pipe to disrupt the resonance pattern would be the cheaper way to go keeping your existing setup. If it doesn't work, you might try cutting it off and moving it downstream just a little. If you can live with the improvements, then you're golden. If not, swapping mufflers with something quieter might be the second step.
