Right now I have Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. The problem is, they drone like hell around 1600 rpm or so. I do have a X pipe with 2.5" exhaust and Hooker Super Comp headers. The drone is bad enough to screw up my stereo listening in my car. Any thing out there I can swap that is quieter so I can hear my tunes while cruising? Straight throughs are obviously even louder than my turbos, but I want something that's quieter but doesn't choke my 470hp 383 at the same time. Thanks
Had the same problem and tried several different mufflers. All droned. My final fix was to use Car Chemistry 2-disc inserts in the header collectors. It lowers the exhaust volume a bit but more importantly it gets rid of the drone. They claim there is no performance impact.

I used just the insert and skipped the caps. I wanted the least restriction possible that got rid of the drone. I also cut the tube a bit shorter to give the required clearance to where the primary pipes merge (the instructions tell you how to measure). They tell you to weld or rivet the inserts but I think that's really only needed for open headers. Mine are just in there with no welds/rivets and there's no rattle. I'm sure soot will freeze them in place pretty quick. They can't slide back due to the reducers.

I had Hooker Aero Chambers on my '81. I have a built 355 with headers. I took them off because they were too quiet.
When I went from side pipes to under-car exhaust I used a kit that had the mufflers which were standard/stock mufflers for a 1971 Corvette. No groan but they don't sound aggressive. If you're looking for a muffler that has an aggressive sound you'll be giving up comfort as all "performance" mufflers I've ever heard or used always has a groan at certain RPM's
I don't know what they sound like as I haven't put them on the car yet, but Allen's stainless exhaust sells an option of C3 mufflers they list as "quiet". I sure hope they turn out that way.

So after you did this it took care of your drone problem right?

Consider putting an H pipe right at the header reducers. I never had good luck getting rid of the 1500 RPM drone with any mods too far back in the system. The H pipe between the reducers made a significant reduction in the drone noise on my car.

If worse comes to worse, I'll try this H pipe. You're right , my X pipe is right under the differential pretty far back
What make and were did you get your stock mufflers? I supposedly have CC stock mufflers on my 1975 base engine and the drone is awful 20 to 35 mph. Called CC tech people and the only answer I got ‘never heard that before’.
I’ve got borla pro xs on my 454. More aggressive than stock, a little drone but really not much at all. Running 2 1/4 pipe with x pipe near the rear of the car.
hmm ... IDK what's on mine, but it's a hush kit on that aluminum exhaust system. OK for now ... but I'd like just a bit of rumble. (my 61 Impala now in resto is getting cherry bomb glass packs ... yes ... I HAVE ARRIVED ... and will soon be DEEEEE PARTING .... with my sonic wake)
Mine has straight dual exhaust ... from the rams horn manifold to the respective side's tail pipe. big muffler right at the tailpipe. (which I don't really like, but that's the order, eh? ... just have to be sure and drive it 20 miles to burn the condensation so it doesn't pool and eat a hole through the muffler!)
