I used to buy 10 year old accords at the auction for 4-500 bucks. Fix timing belt or trans or light nose hit. 35 buck quart of paint. Sold 2 weeks later for 15-1800. The people that have to get to work tomorrow aren't shopping for Corvettes. It's a luxury item. They don't have to have it. If you want to buy fix and sell something and make a little money that's the way you have to go.
I do that with motorcycles as a hobby but have no intention of doing that with cars. I want to find a keeper but the last car was not it. Hoping this one is and it all works out.

I once owned this '77 L82 4 speed convertible. It was a real pleasure to drive. The L82 and 4 speed are woth it but not many '77's are found with that combo. Good luck.

I remember the TV show, some bald fat guy with glasses on the show too? But never watched it.
That's a sharp looking well dressed guy there. Yeah, I had an off white leather belt and two pair of off white/white dress shoes too. Those were the '70s. I had to dress for work with jacket and tie every day.. watched TV every night back then. Good and busy times back then. My highest income grossing years. 👍

So I went and looked at the car today. It is an X vin code L82 car but the engine is not original. Suffix is CHR which is either a 170hp or 205hp. No rust on the car other than the exhaust. Seats were originally blue and dyed black and the dye is cracking and the blue is showing through. Paint is fare with several small blemishes but good shine. It has the right steering column with the wiper switch on the turn signal lever and the wipers work (that was a big issue on my other car). Windows do not work, brakes need work and the A/C is there with the R4 compressor but it also does not work. Tires are old but the rally wheels are in good shape. I offered the owner $5k and he is asking for $5300 but I think he will take the $5k. He says he drives it often even with the bad brakes so I'm confident the clutch and trans are good. Questions is, does the non-original engine hurt the value and if so, how much?
Without a numbers matching engine (with the engine code) you'll have to go digging to determine if the 4-speed is original. Trim tag missing, now in resale red with a black interior? Hmm...
But, honestly, who cares? A 1977 Vette, with three pedals, rust free, with an engine you can swap out without a second thought? $5K is a bargain. You have a great start, as long as the car is sound and worth restomodding.
As others have said, don't expect to break even, and enjoy the car for what it is, a beautiful toy that is fun to drive and spend money on! Drive the hell out of it, and enjoy every moment!
