Default 68' Differential mount question

Good afternoon all .....

When i look underneath my 1968 corvette it appears to be missing 4 nuts and washers mounting it to the cross member.

I included a pic so you can see what i am looking at...

Here's the question --- are the hole threaded and the bolts tightened into the threads or are there supposed to be nuts and washers holding it in ....

Thanks in advance

-Mike-

No nuts; the bolts thread directly into the diff cover.

At least you have a heavy duty replacement rear end cover already installed. The original GM one's would crack off at the lower spring mounting bolt holes. Lou.

I belonged to Corvette Cleveland Corvette club at the time and never heard a word about this. I was divorced and stopped at a night club one Saturday night and I met a fellow C-3 Corvette owner.
He told me how his had cracked and I wandered out to the parking lot and crawled under my car and sure enough, mine was cracked! I couldn't believe it. He told me who replaced his cover and I had mine changed.
At the time, my 68 coupe was my daily driver for 4 1/2 years....46 years I have owned it now. Lou.

If you ever replace the spring or tighten up those bolts, the bolts should never be torqued unless the full weight of the car is on the wheels and spring. If you tighten the bolts with the rear off the ground and the spring not compressed fully against the cover you can break the mount ears.

Mike, you have a beautiful Corvette, but get rid of the rubber fuel hose....don't want to see it go up in flames.

I can absolutely see how that could happen CanadaGrant… in my case the springs and entire suspension were already done when I got the car.

Thanks for the response here …

Mike
