I had my steering column rebuilt and refinished and I'd like to keep the keys from scratching the column. I was thinking about trying to find some clear vinyl or something, not big, but just a small square or something to protect the paint from getting chipped over time. Hind sight, I would have requested them be powder coated but maybe another time. So, has anyone done this before? Anyone have a good source for some type of clear film?
Back in the day, I got a square of red leather (interior is red), and attached a couple of strips of elastic fabric and velcro. Strapped it to the column so it protected the column below the ignition. It worked perfectly until I started minimizing the keys I kept on the ring.
I was thinking just a small piece of clear vinyl or something. Not sure where to get something like that. Screen protector is a good idea but now they're all glass.
This is what I do. After you start the car, grab the key ring and hook it over the top of the thumb lever of the ignition switch. It holds all the keys up high nice and tight against the ignition switch and away from the column. They barely move at all.

uh... go to best buy or Walmart... 3/4 of them are plastic
3M makes a product called Cleartastic that would work for this. You should be able to find it on Amazon or some other supplier. It is often applied to the exterior of a car to protect the paint on the front end, kick up areas, anywhere likely to get blasted with bugs or road debris. Just a few mils thick and clear so it won't be too noticeable.
