no need to disassemble it. if you own it, go on telling everybody it is an LT1. until time to sell it, of course. if you don't own it, don't buy it. it won't be the only thing seller is being disingenuous about.

Yeah, but it says cgz therefore is an LT1 engine even though it's the only 77 LT1 engine ever made. I hope they didn't actually think they were fooling anybody...

Think you're right the guy I bought it off was dishonest from the start. It runs well but I'd like to get the car back to original spec whether it was an LT1 or not. But I guess I will never know what it left the factory with?

It's a 71. What is the fifth digit in the vehicle identification number?

I've had two 1971 C3 over last 19 years. Each had Base L48 and both had three letter engine code pad stamp appropriate for that year-make-model. I'm always learning something. I may easily be mistaken, but I don't recall VIN contributing anything about engine ID of either 1971 C3.

OK...partially correct-
maybe August 16th of 1971 when the 72 model year came out....
The filth digit on ALL 71's is a "S" for St.Louis
If the fifth digit was the engine code- there would be a fewer LS6s running around...

The hand-engraved letters in post #16 are comical. My grandfather did a better job engraving his tools. You can see where the angle grinder left the head pad intact before grinding off the old numbers. I'm surprised the engine isn't still painted GM Corporate Blue (though that may have been a 78+ thing).
Anyway, I'm no expert, but there are other ways to determine if an LT-1 was born that way. Also, there is a (slim) chance that the transmission has a VIN-matching stamp on it (again, not an expert). It's probably worth digging.
But, yeah, this is a NOM car, and hopefully was disclosed as such at sale, and priced accordingly.
