Default Bonding the headlight header bar

I have done the searches and have seen what has been used. I will always ask again in case a better new product has come on the market. What are the best and easiest brands to use to bond the header bar.

Sorry, I dont recall the product part number, but when I did mine years ago it was 2 tubes of Lord-Fusor adhesive in the double "caulking" gun made specifically
for metal to fiberglass bonding.

Rock solid.

I got the header out Saturday. I read your instructions on Friday night and that is how I pretty much did it . Except I didn't cut it into 3 pieces. Mine wasn't rusted to bad and will be reused. Thanks for the write up. I went with the 3m because it came in a kit with the gun. I didn't want to buy the adhesive and then somehow get the wrong gun. And the guns I saw were between $65 and $100.

SEM would have loaned you a gun for free. I like the SEM 39747 due to it really works and it beign an epoxy based product. IF you cover any bare steel with it. It will not rust.

Glad you got it installed.

I have to agree... while I own my own gun (and they are not cheap), most suppliers will loan you the gun. I've always boasted you could glue water to oil (while I really know you can't) with the 39747, the stuff is awesome.

We use it on our our front end installations because it affords you a longer working time compared to the original GM kits and it still has pretty much the same color as the original GM kits. With the GM kits... you had to S*&^ and get... you probably had 30 minutes of work time if that much. The SEM dries slower and works great. I've never used the 3-M kit, so I don't know how well it will work so for me having the gun kinda of keeps me from exploring other options but I'll keep my ear to the rail if the 3m stuff works just as good.

thank you Ernie. I am sure the 3 M works just as good as the others. To be honest this really isn't a hard job to do.

You are exactly correct! Take your time and while a tedious job, if you take your time you'll be fine.... Like I said, I've never used the 3 M stuff, but rarely does 3M make something that doesn't work perfectly.

The funny thing about the adhesives that are offered now by many different manufactures such as SEM, LORD FUSOR,PLIOGRIP, 3M, etc is that they are not all the same.

Some adhesives want the metal to be bare steel a really rough while other adhesives can be applied on an epoxy primed part.

So knowing what your adhesive is designed to do is important so it will stick and not pull apart in time.

When I asked them if they had a gun to lend they looked at me like I was crazy.

You should have called SEM...because I know they do loan out application guns.

I have specifically asked SEM about this when I call them so I am not putting out bad information SO...if the place you got it from looked at you like you were crazy...They were NOT the area rep for SEM who could have handled this issue and got you one. Where you got it from is a retail store who is into selling you one to make money ...and NOT like SEM who wants you to use the product and not loose a sale due to having to make people buy an application gun for a one time use once.

If anyone has doubts...call SEM and ask them. Tech line number is 1-800-831-1122

I am sure you are not putting out bad information. Anytime you post something it is usually spot on. They looked at me like they didn't know what I was talking about. Anyway it didn't matter as I prefer to have my own tools. That way I am not dependent on anyone. I bought the epoxy and the gun off e bay for $90.
