Yes these were done by hand and done by humans back then. Mistakes were made and corrected on the fly. My 68 coupe is very original and the engine number appears to have been stamped with the vin previous in production and the the last number was stamped over to correct. You can see the number was stamped with a 5 at the end and then a 6 was stamped over the last digit to correct. The chances that someone was able to find the engine from the car 1 digit earlier in production and use it to falsify this car is unlikely. The chances that the car one digit earlier being also a 390hp 427 build is also very unlikely. The guy on the production line forgetting to change the number in the stamp, more likely.
